PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT
Psychoeducational assessment helps answer questions about learning disabilities, ADHD, and academic strengths and weaknesses. We can assess school-age children through adults in college or graduate school, and provide a list of recommendations and/or accommodations to help you or your child function at their best.
If your child is in a Texas K-12 public school, your school district may offer a similar kind of testing for no cost. If your child is in private school, or if you (or your child's pediatrician) have other concerns, please give us a call to schedule a consultation where we can decide together whether or not a psychoeducational assessment is appropriate.
We charge a fee based on time used for these type of assessments, which depends on the questions that need to be answered. A typical assessment can range from $1700-2500. This covers the cost of testing, interpretation, and writing a report that includes specific recommendations for accommodation in school/work settings specifically tailored to strengths and weaknesses.

Personality Assessment
A Personality Assessment is typically appropriate for someone who is already working with a psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor, marriage/family therapist, or clinical social worker. Sometimes despite having fully engaged in therapy, you and your therapist may be concerned that you've "hit a wall" in terms of your treatment goals. A personality assessment can help you learn how you process emotion, how you see the world, and what skills you're particularly good at (and which might be growth areas for the future). It usually involves significant psychological testing and an extensive interview, but this can vary. Each assessment is unique and customized to answer specific questions you and your therapist might have about you.
Pre-Surgical Assessments / "Second Letter Writer"
Dr. McDonald offers Pre-surgical Assessments for transgender individuals who wish to undergo surgery to conform their bodies to their gender identity. These are one-time assessments with a report delivered directly to your surgeon, and are conducted per World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) guidelines (Dr. McDonald is a member of WPATH).
With this sort of assessment, expect to spend the majority of a day (3-5 hours) with a psychologist. It involves psychological testing and a 90-120 minute interview. The result is a full report document that you can use to support your treatment with your surgeon or povri
A similar but shorter psychological assessment (a "Clinical Assessment of Gender Dysphoria") is sometimes required by doctors or insurance prior to beginning hormone treatment. This kind of assessment includes less testing, but a similar interview.
Pre-surgical Assessments are billed at a flat rate of $650 and may take 3-5 hours, and Clinical Assessments are billed at $350, and usually take about 2 hours.
